How Long Does A DS-160 Form Last?

Hourglass

The DS-160 form, used for nonimmigrant visa applications to the United States, does not have an official expiration date once submitted. However, its length of validity is different depending on your specific scenario.

Unsubmitted DS-160

After completing the DS-160 but before submitting it, the form remains editable and valid for 30 days in the Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC) system. If not submitted within this period, you will need to start a new form.

After Submitting your DS-160 Online

Once the DS-160 is submitted online, it becomes locked for edits and is valid for use throughout the visa application process. However, the associated visa application fee (MRV fee) must be paid, and the visa interview scheduled within 1 year of the payment date, as the fee expires after 365 days.

During the Visa Interview Process

After submitting the DS-160, the next step is to schedule your visa appointment and pay the MRV fee. The DS-160 itself does not expire during this process, but your MRV fee is valid for 1 year from the payment date.

You must attend your appointment and complete all required steps (e.g., biometrics, interview) before the MRV fee expires. If delays occur, you may need to complete a new DS-160 and pay another MRV fee.

When You Need to Create a New DS-160

A new DS-160 form may be required if your application process is delayed beyond the MRV fee’s validity or if your information changes significantly (e.g., personal details, travel plans). In such cases, the original DS-160 cannot be updated, and a new form must be completed and submitted.

Tip: Always save your DS-160 confirmation number and application ID for tracking, scheduling, and resubmitting if necessary.
